Dr. Janet Silverstein is a Professor of Pediatrics, is board certified in Pediatric Endocrinology, and is the founder of the UF Gender Health clinic. Dr. Silverstein assembled a multidisciplinary team dedicated to caring for gender non-conforming youth. The team includes endocrinologists (Dr. Silverstein and Dr. Colette Meehan) , endocrine fellows (Dr. Kristin Dayton) and psychologists (Dr. Hancock-Smith). Dr. Silverstein completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Rochester, attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, stayed in Philadelphia for pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and then completed her pediatric endocrinology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center before coming to the University of Florida where she has spent her entire academic faculty career. She has served on several national committees, including President of the Pediatric Endocrine Society, Chair of the Section of Endocrinology of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatrics.
Her goal is to provide a safe and welcoming environment in which gender non-conforming youth and their parents can receive excellent care, including psychosocial assessment and medical assessment and treatment as appropriate. Each patient is given individualized care based on his or her needs. Recognizing the importance of family support, we hope to have an annual weekend which would feature speakers and social events, giving parents a chance to talk to other parents and the youth to meet other youth dealing with similar issues.
