Sex as a Biological Variable in the NICU: From Bedside to Bench and Back
Dr. Krithika Lingappan is a federally funded successful Physician-Scientist in Neonatology. She is presently a tenured Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology at the University of Pennsylvania at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Lingappan’s lab has made several seminal contributions, and she has created a unique niche in the field of sex-specific differences in the premature neonate with original and high-quality rigorous research. Her publications have elucidated the molecular mechanisms behind sex-specific differences in the pathogenesis of disease processes including bronchopulmonary dysplasia to directly address knowledge gaps in the molecular mechanisms behind the sexually divergent incidence of BPD and identify novel molecular pathways for future therapeutic targets. She has raised awareness about the importance of sex as a biological variable in neonatal lung injury and repair by conducting rigorous and reproducible research and reporting it in a transparent fashion.
