Turning Pages Promoting health literacy
Turning Pages is a UF student-led organization that works to improve and advance health literacy through reading and educational interventions in Alachua County elementary schools.
About Our Program
Reading comprehension
One-On-One Mentoring
Our medical student volunteers work one-on-one with elementary school students for 30 minutes each week of the school year. During these sessions, we work with students to improve reading and writing skills.
Health & STEM Education
Classroom Teaching
We provide approximately two to three in-classroom teaching sessions throughout the fall and spring semesters. During these sessions, we cover concepts such as anatomy, health, and nutrition.
Who We Serve
Empowering Young Minds
Our program is geared towards elementary-aged students, with a focus on third graders. Studies have found that children who are not reading proficiently in third grade are less likely to graduate from high school on time. By offering early literacy interventions, we aim to ensure that every student possesses the critical thinking, reading, and health advocacy skills necessary to thrive.
